You are my trekking pole hero. I was lost until I found your video. I'd say that 90 percent of the how to videos and folks I meet on the trail are using, at leas in some part, incorrect techniques. It's all in the straps baby!

This is good actually. A proper punch (in defense) should use your tricep. The bicep is only used to return the fist into it's stance position.

That's true and that's what you want. Optimal walking form engages spinal rotation - imagine someone squirting WD-40 into your spine as you walk - major lubrication from movement. So - obliques, lats and triceps - walking with ATTITUDE, walking YOUNG. Very healthy! Enjoy!

I've been hiking without poles all my life.... and EVERYONE I hike with that have poles and have been using them for ever all have bum knees and bitch all the way down a trail. Dump the poles and learn how to walk correctly! I hike 20 miles a day with a 40 lb pack and never have a single issue. I also think its super funny when the poles actually trip them up because people rely on them to much. I've been working to get people OFF trekking poles. This video makes me laugh!

Here's what I think: You can Nordic Walk with Trekking Poles, but you would not want to hike with Nordic Walking poles. If you're going to do a lot of Nordic PoleWalking, you might want to invest in NW poles. Visit our Facebook(dot)com/PoleWalking page for more info or the website PolesForMobility(dot)com

I'm 21 and lost 8 kilos in 2 months with regular nordic walking trainings, and a change in dietary (eating more fruits, yoghurt, eating no junk food at all, nor chocolate) Problem is this sport is only popular among people over 40, when you do a complete training it has effect for almost 95% of your body muscles!

  • @vaidotas86

@macran3 As with any new skill, start nice and easy. Try Nordic Walking (and do learn optimal technique) for 5 minutes once or twice a day. Work up incrementally so that your body accepts the new movement. Celebrate small victories and then build on them. I cannot stress this enough. Progressively learning a new skill is the way to achieve muscle memory. For more info: visit PolesForMobility (dot) com Enjoy! jayah

@miketh2005 Good Question, thanks! Nordic Walking improves focus and spine function - significantly, not just a little bit! We lose spine function as we age; Nordic Walking helps to rotate and elongate the spine by recruiting the muscles that support the spine - specifically the latissimus dorsi, lower trapezius and oblique muscles. Once you feel the power, the lengthened stride, the improved endurance, you'll love the attitude you gain even without poles. It's not magic, it's healthy walking

@slodeth5 I'm sure you have not adapted to trekking poles, so you can't appreciate them: they give more balance, more grip and make you resist longer before needing to rest, they increase general safety when exploring. think about it! bye :-)

@MrOregona230 Learning optimal use provides huge benefits - that's our point! On downhill, save your knees by using rectus abdominus, pectoralis & biceps muscles. The core muscles absorb stress from your knees. Strengthening the muscles is just one of the many benefits. Impaling is not something we see with even basic instruction. The Hiking Poles DVD has downhill instruction as well as many tips for more safely and completely descending. Visit AdventureBuddies site for more info.

@finishstrongdoc Made own poles 37 yrs ago out of shower rod&crutch tipw/strap of webbing. Because poles don"t adjust "on the fly" the hip high height works good enuf for both ups and downs.Chris Townsend "uber"hiker also likes poles with angled grip>That's my advice for what it's worth. Still' "hike your own hike" and don't forget to look up once in a while! Peace.

Nice comback Ms.Jayah:congrats! My advice: use straps same as ski poles, hand goes in bottom of strap hole, grip top of strap where it attatches to pole, then gip pole. This gives mechanical advantage, reduces hand fatigue& tecnique mimics socket joint . Also, notice horse or mule and think of poles as two more legs. This suggests pole height should be no higher than hip socket. I like poles with angle grip, better ergonomically, just "feel"better. Made my own hiking poles 37 yrs ago

@58JayKay Great Cross Training! Be sure to check out the Nordic Walking page at the AdventureBuddies website as well as our new blog for tutorials and benefits comparisons. Rubber tips are essential. See blog for shoe recommendations. Not sure about the poles you have. Probably you can use them but possibly not optimally. If you're going to do an activity, having optimal gear (see blog for what this means) can significantly improve your performance & benefits. Enjoy!

I'm looking to get into nordic walking as an alternate form of outdoor activity and exercise. Last winter, I purchased a pair of snowshoes with poles, similar to the type your demonstrating here, with the height adjustment and rubber tips. Will I be able to use those when walking? How important are the rubber tips? What type of shoes would you recommend? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thank God for this video on how to walk with sticks. I've walked since I was a tiny baby, but never realized how wrong I was doing it. Instead of looking like a blonde Scandinavian Norseman, I must have appeared to be a circus chimpanzee all these decades. Embarrassing.

With your excellent DVD, I have learned how to effectively use my trekking poles and Ihave become a better hiker. My knees are also a whole lot happier since I have used my poles. Going down the trails, it is as if you are hiking next to me, instructing me around every bend and up every hill. I'd recommend your DVD to anyone who loves the outdoors and also wants to exercise effectively. Keep on posting more videos. Marlene

Great video but I'm confused; shouldn't the grip be released as swing back? It doesn't show that in this video. Also, does anyone know how to increase the exertion for a more challenging walk using the poles? I am addicted to Nordic walking! Everyone should try it!
